Still Life Without Fuss By JOHN BIGGS © 2006 The New York Times Company TAKING close-ups of objects seems simple - set up the camera, frame the shot, snap the picture. Unfortunately, the vagaries of light and positioning can turn even the most basic object shot into a shadowy mess. The Lowel Ego aims to prevent that. A $125 lighting kit for amateurs and professionals alike, it is designed to allow excellent still-life shots with minimal fuss. The kit consists of a 27-watt fluorescent lamp wrapped in a translucent plastic frame. The frame diffuses the light over any object and casts a soft shadow. It also includes a special reflecting card designed to allow you to bounce light back onto the object from any angle. But the real value of the Ego is that you can dispense with your camera's flash and instead rely on a clean wash of light with only minimal shadows. The optional Ego Sweep is a $30 stand for holding up papers, enabling budding advertising photographers to capture items against a white or colored background. There is also a dual light kit, with two lights, a Sweep and two reflecting cards, for $268. The kits are available through authorized Lowel distributors. The Ego Web site, lowelego.com, includes helpful hints on how to set up a scene using the lamps and cards. While the best light is almost always sunlight, the Lowel Ego is an excellent substitute. |
