Using Rifa Handheld, as an Eyelight |

I utilize my Rifa 44 with the soft eggcrate
as a handheld eyelight. There are often
times when the actor's face is positioned
in such a way that the keylight doesn't
quite catch both eyes.
I try to pre-rig locations to the point that we can come in on the shooting day, make some adjustments and start filming as quickly as possible. I light the wide shots with broader strokes placing the lighting units out of frame or hiding them within it. Then we clean up the closer shots of the actors as we move in, bringing lights and diffusion frames closer as we go. Occasionally, the camera movement ( a 360 pan, or moving in from a very wide shot into a CU in the same shot) prohibits bringing large soft light systems close enough for close up work, so I will handhold a Rifa 44 or 55 to help model the actor's face or provide them with that sparkle in their eyes. The 40 degree eggcrate helps keep spill light off of the background and allows me to control the intensity by just wasting a little bit if I need to. |
